From Shakespeare to the power of solitude; author events at the Cambridge Festival

From understanding anti-Blackness in Shakespeare to harnessing the power of solitude, and landscapes to life on other planets, our 2024 roster of author events for the Cambridge Festival is sure to tantalize your curiosity. A diverse selection of our esteemed authors is set to fascinate crowds with their original and accessible research at this year’s Cambridge Festival, held in the heart of Cambridge.

The Cambridge Festival, which takes place 13-28 March 2024, aims to tackle some of the big questions of our age and seeks to find possible solutions. It celebrates the world-leading research connected to Cambridge and presents it across four themes: society, health, environment, discovery, and power.

Shakespeare’s White Others, Thursday 14 March 3-4pm – Online

Find out how anti-Blackness is woven into the works of Shakespeare. Written with a general audience in mind, Shakespeare’s White Others is a useful resource for anyone who wants to learn about Shakespearean drama, performance, sociology, social psychology, critical race studies, and more. Join Dr. David Sterling Brown for an interactive event, including a tour of his innovative virtual-reality art gallery and its inaugural exhibition entitled Visualizing Race Virtually.

Lifescapes, Monday 18 March, 7-8pm

Why does landscape matter to us? Join Rural historian Dr Jeremy Burchardt for a walk through his fascinating book. He draws upon three remarkable unpublished diaries that explore the vital role that the landscape plays in people's lives. Follow Burchardt’s literary journey through three wonderfully unique perspectives, documented between 1852 and 1956.

Astrobiology and the Christan Doctrine, Wednesday 20 March, 7-8pm

Are we alone, or is there other life in the universe? How did life start on Earth, and what might that tell us about life elsewhere? Andrew Davison brings his extensive knowledge of theology, philosophy, and the natural sciences to this lively debate. Join Davison for a whistlestop tour of the centuries-long story of the human quest to understand how life got going and the current state of scientific thinking.

Join renowned solitude researchers, Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Netta Weinstein for an integrative talk about how to harness the power of solitude.
