What makes Empower special?
Sustained motivation is key to successful language learning. Empower’s clear learning goals (at the start of every lesson), with thought provoking opening unit images, texts, video and speaking activities create an emotional response, helping teachers to deliver motivating and memorable lessons.
Â
Lesson C offers thorough coverage of functional language for common everyday situations helping learners to communicate effectively in the real world.
Two powerful Cambridge English resources – the Cambridge Corpus and English Profile – have been used to inform the development of the course syllabus around grammar and vocabulary.
Â
The language in the course is informed by our unique multi-billion-word language database, the Cambridge English Corpus, which includes formal, informal, written and spoken language. It also includes the Cambridge Learner Corpus, a unique collection of exam scripts written by students taking Cambridge English exams all over the world.
Â
An example is the Cambridge Corpus–informed Tips, with notes on usage and typical errors which helps learners improve usage and tackle habitual mistakes.
Â
With expert insight into what language items learners can understand at each Council of Europe Framework of Reference (CEFR) level, you can be confident that your students are encountering the most relevant language at the right point in their learning journey.
The world-leading language research behind Empower Second edition means you can feel assured that your students are learning the most relevant language for real-life written and spoken communication. Every unit is divided into four lessons, A, B, C and D. Lesson C is 'Everyday English' with thorough coverage of functional 'useful language' for common everyday situations to help learners communicate effectively in the real world. Each C lesson ends with a practical spoken outcome. In addition to this, the supplementry 'Real-world video' documentaries provide students with further opportunities to explore the themes of the unit.
Â

End-of-unit tests, mid- and end of-course competency tests, and personalised CEFR test report forms which break down progress by language skills.
Â
The tests within Empower are developed and validated by Cambridge University Press and Assessment, the world-leaders in language assessment – so you know the results are reliable. The rigorous validation process involved over 35,000 trials in 43 countries to ensure that all tests are accurate, meaningful and fair.
These high-interest supplementary videos expose students to English in authentic, real-world contexts, thematically linked to the topics and language of each unit. Each video comes with a downloadable and printable video worksheet.
Page-faithful eBooks that adapt to whatever screen is being used, from smartphones to desktops. They also have embedded audio and video, plus note taking tools. For the teacher there’s Presentation Plus - everything you need to teach Empower digitally.

Â
Developing Life Competencies
The Cambridge Life Competencies Framework (CLCF) has been developed to provide clarity on the range of life skills, or 21st century skills, that can be integrated in English language programmes, and how those skills develop across the different stages of education.
Â
We have mapped all levels of the Empower Second edition course to this framework. In the brochure below, you'll be able to see how we've used the insights from this research in the development of the course, ensuring that your students are equipped with the life skills enabling them to thrive in higher education and the workplace.
