Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics

Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics

Anil W. Date, Indian Institute of Technology
August 2009
Paperback

Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics is a textbook for advanced undergraduate and first year graduate students in mechanical, aerospace and chemical engineering. The book emphasizes understanding CFD through physical principles and examples. The author follows a consistent philosophy of control volume formulation of the fundamental laws of fluid motion and energy transfer, and introduces a novel notion of 'smoothing pressure correction' for solution of flow equations on collocated grids within the framework of the well-known SIMPLE algorithm. The subject matter is developed by considering pure conduction/diffusion, convective transport in 2-dimensional boundary layers and in fully elliptic flow situations and phase-change problems in succession. The book includes chapters on discretization of equations for transport of mass, momentum and energy on Cartesian, structured curvilinear and unstructured meshes, solution of discretised equations, numerical grid generation and convergence enhancement. Practising engineers will find this particularly useful for reference and for continuing education.

    • Single method (Finite - Volume) for wide variety of problems
    • Treatment based of physical principles in which mathematics are employed to serve the requirements of physics
    • Over 50 solved problems, over 130 practice problems, provision of user friendly computer programs in appendices, and a solutions manual

    Reviews & endorsements

"Professor Date's new book titled Introduction to Computational Fluid Dynamics offers a fresh approach to solving fluid flow problems...In summary this book is ideal for new students of the topic and also a good reference book for seasoned practitioners of CFD in academia and industry, alike."
    Neelesh A. Patankar, ITTB Newsletter

"Examples of applications are given throughout the book and are quite broadly based...There are lots of useful diagrams throughout, as well as fragments of Fortran code illustrating specific points of implementation...In summary, this is a useful introductory text covering a topic where good books are scarce, and is worthy of inclusion on CFD course reading lists."
Stewart Cant, Journal of Fluid Mechanics

"The book provides a useful introduction to the topic of computational fluid dynamics with a focus upon convection processes."
J.P. Denier, Theoretical Computational Fluid Dynamics
