At the University of Surrey in 1995 an EPSRC Spring School was held in Applied Nonlinear Mathematics for postgraduate students in mathematics, engineering, physics or biology; this volume contains the bulk of the lectures given there, by a team of internationally distinguished scientists. The aim of the school was to introduce students to current topics of research interest at an appropriate level. The majority of the courses are in the area of nonlinear dynamics with application to fluid mechanics, boundary layer transition, driven oscillators and waves. However, there are also lectures considering problems in nonlinear elasticity and mathematical biology. The articles have all been edited so that the book forms a coherent and accessible account of recent advances in nonlinear mathematics.

    • A coherent and accessible account of recent advances in applied nonlinear mathematics research
    • Includes work from prominent workers in this area (Gibbon, Mullin)
    • Covers a range of important application areas

    Reviews & endorsements

"...Philip J. Aston has superbly executed his role as editor of this anthology by creating a readable, visually attractive, and technically informative textbook from the contributions of a collection of authors, whose names are a 'who's who' of nonlinear mathematics." John Stockwell, The Leading Edge

"This book provides a broad range of applications for nonlinear mathematics and positively demonstrates the utility of the tools under development...This book is well written and well produced, with excellent figures and graphics..." William Eichinger, Optics and Photonics News
