Proceedings of the Fifth British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD 5)
This volume contains the invited and selected papers of the Fifth British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD 5) which took place at the University of Kent at Canterbury on 14-16 July 1986. The BNCOD series of conferences, which are organised in association with the British Computer Society, aim to bring new developments and current research to the widest possible range of database practitioners. The fifth conference in this series concentrated on two main themes: databases, knowledge bases and semantics; and the wider application of databases. A range of both complementary and contrasting papers in the general area of knowledge base enhancements for databases and semantic integrity are presented. Under the theme of wider applications came papers which covered such topics as statistical database systems, systems for scientists, an expert system linked to a relational database, and databases for software engineering.
