Cambridge University Press has been shortlisted for the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) Sustainability Award at the upcoming Independent Publishing Awards 2021 this September.

This is the second year that the Press has been shortlisted, after winning the inaugural award last year with an entry that showcased the powerful combination of its publishing on climate change and sustainability, concrete actions to make its operations more sustainable and the energy and enthusiasm of colleagues whose ideas and actions are coordinated by an Environment Action Group.

Publishing again played a strong part in this year’s entry, with current highlights such as a new edition of Mike Berners-Lee’s There is No Planet B and the successful Cambridge Elements series on Earth System Governance, set alongside an exciting line-up of forthcoming trade titles, text books, journals and reports.

The entry also covered the development of science based targets for carbon reduction, work to gather data on global emissions and impacts, and initiatives such as the commitment to plastic free journal distribution by the end of 2022.

Launched in 2007, the awards are run by the Independent Publisher’s Guild and are the UK’s biggest annual celebration of independent publishing.

Head of Sustainability for Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Vicky Evans, said, “We are thrilled to be nominated for the award again this year. The Press has established our presence in the field by winning the milestone, inaugural award from the IPG last year. This latest nomination will help motivate us as we pool our strengths in the sustainability field and use our insights and expertise from across our new organisation to continue the fight against climate change.”

The winners will be announced on Tuesday 21 September.
