When a mechanical system has two or more coupled vibrating components, the vibration of one of the components may destabilize the motion of the others. This destabilization effect, autoparametric resonance, is a concept that has important engineering applications. This book is the first completely devoted to the subject of autoparametric resonance in an engineering context. Using the tools of nonlinear analysis, the authors show how to carry out the first crucial step of determining the regions of parameter space where the semi-trivial solution is unstable. They describe what happens in these regions and then discuss non-trivial solutions and their stability.
This text will appeal to graduate students and researchers in engineering and applied mathematics.

    • Only available book covering autoparametric resonance in engineering
    • The authors are internationally recognised experts in the field
    • Offers a lucid explanation of this potentially difficult subject

    Reviews & endorsements

"The authors are to be congratulated on producing a volume that must stimulate everyone anxious not only to keep abreast with a field that shows such a vibrant and perhaps surprising amount of new phenommena and challenges to both engineers and mathematicians, but also to contribute to its development through inspiration derived from this book. Both in style and in content, the book is so impressive and inspirational that a wider appeal, amongst the target audience of engineers and mathematicians, is assured, leading to several exciting new possibilities." Current Engineering Practice

    "...interesting and useful..." Technische Meckanik

"The figures are clearly drawn, and the book has a nice appearance...a good source of material for someone that is interested in the general area of nonlinear vibration, in particular, motion of autoparametric systems...an excellent monograph, and this reviewer recommends it for researchers, graduate students, and libraries."
