Over 160 years of assessment heritage

Discover one of the world's richest archives of school exams, educational assessment, qualifications and standards.

Our assessment archive supports learners and educational researchers by providing a rich resource of information about the development of school exams and educational assessment.

Public examinations have been closely associated with education and the educational aspirations of societies since the mid nineteenth-century. The University of Cambridge pioneered school-leaving examinations through its Local Examinations Syndicate, established in 1858 and which today is part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

The assessment archive is held and managed by a professional archive team at our Cambridge head office. The archive records the development of end-of-school and English qualifications, in the UK and worldwide, through dynamic collections of assessment documentation - which include examination syllabuses and question papers, administrative and overseas development papers.
